REAL FACTS

Fact: The circulatory system is more than 60,000 miles long.

If a child’s entire circulatory system we are talking veins, arteries, and capillaries were laid out flat, it would stretch for more than 60,000 miles. By the time we reach adulthood, our bodies have become home to approximately 100,000 miles of blood vessels. Blood vessels circulate blood throughout your body. They help deliver oxygen to vital organs and tissues, and also remove waste products. Together, the heart vessels and blood vessels form your circulatory system. Your body contains about 60,000 miles of blood vessels. Combined with the cardiovascular system, the circulatory system helps fight off disease, helps the body maintain a normal body temperature, and provides the right chemical balance for the body to achieve homeostasis, or a state of stability among all its systems.

There are three types of blood vessels:

Ã˜Arteries carry blood away from your heart.

ØVeins carry blood back toward your heart.

ØCapillaries, the smallest blood vessels, connect arteries and veins.

Blood vessels include veins, arteries and capillaries. That's long enough to go around the world more than twice! Blood flows continuously through your body's blood vessels. Your heart is the pump that makes it all possible.

The circulatory system consists of four major components:

  • heart
  • arteries
  • veins
  • blood

The heart and its function

About the size of two adult hands held together, the heart rests near the center of the chest. Thanks to consistent pumping, the heart keeps the circulatory system working at all times.

The arteries and their function

Arteries carry blood away from the heart. The arteries are the blood vessels that deliver oxygen-rich blood from the heart to the tissues of the body. Each artery is a muscular tube lined by smooth tissue.

The veins and their function

The blood moves back to the heart through veins. Veins serve a critical function within our bodies. When blood has been pumped by the heart to various parts of the body, it must return back to the heart. In a metaphorical sense, veins are the return portion of a round-trip plane ticket. The veins serve the purpose of delivering the blood, now bluish in color, back to the right atrium (chamber) of our heart.

The blood and its function

Blood is the transport medium of nearly everything within the body. It moves hormones, nutrients, oxygen, antibodies, and other important things needed to keep the body healthy.
